DHS Creates Position For Michigan’s Arab, Muslim Americans
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is creating a Detroit-based U.S. Customs and Border Protection community relations position.
The role is dedicated to building trust and working with Michigan’s Arab and Muslim American communities, and other minority groups.
It took years of deliberation between various Homeland Security administrations and local community leaders to create the liaison post.
The change stems from the documented ill-treatment of Arab and Muslim Americans at border checkpoints and airports.
U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, a Michigan Democrat, facilitated the discussions.
Peters and DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas recently met with leaders from Michigan’s Arab and Muslim American communities to discuss civil rights issues.
