Destruction of Ukraine’s dam puts thousands of civilians in danger: UN
GENEVA (AA): The destruction of the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine jeopardizes the lives of thousands of civilians, the UN humanitarian affairs coordination office has said.
“The destruction of the Kakhovka Dam puts thousands of civilians in danger, leaving many with no homes and in dire humanitarian need,” OCHA Ukraine said on Twitter.
“Civilians and civilian infrastructure are not a target!” it warned.
Explosions at the Kakhovka hydropower plant near Kherson unleashed floodwaters on Tuesday. Both Moscow and Kyiv have accused each other of the attack.
Meanwhile, the Swiss Foreign Ministry said is “deeply concerned” by the attack, adding: “Systematic military attacks on civilian infrastructure are unacceptable and represent a severe violation of International Humanitarian Law. “This must stop immediately.”
