Denmark condemns Quran burning as ‘shameful act
COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AA) – Denmark has condemned the burning of the Muslim holy book, the Quran, calling it a shameful act.
A statement from the Danish Foreign Ministry said the provocative act hurt many people and created division between different religions and cultures.
It said that many Danish citizens are Muslims and they are a valued part of the Danish population.
The statement added that Denmark supports the right to protest, but stressed that it must remain peaceful.
On Friday, members of the Islamophobic and far-right nationalist group in the country burned a copy of the Holy Quran outside the Iraqi Embassy in the Danish capital Copenhagen.
Earlier, an Iraqi refugee living in Sweden crushed the Holy Quran just weeks after setting fire to pages of the holy book outside a Stockholm Mosque.
In January of this year, Rasmus Paludan, a Danish far-right extremist, burned a copy of the Quran outside the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm.
Following his Islamophobic act, a Turkish court issued an arrest warrant for Paludan.
As part of the investigation, the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office requested Paludan’s arrest to obtain a statement regarding the Quran-burning incident.
The Ankara 8th Criminal Court of Peace, upon evaluating the request, decided to issue an arrest warrant for the Danish politician.
