Democrats push Trump to oust Musk by May 30 over ethics concerns
A group of 77 House Democrats is urging President Donald Trump to remove Elon Musk from his special government role by May 30.
Axios news reports that the lawmakers say Musk has exceeded the 130-day legal limit allowed for special government employees.
Musk leads the unofficial “Department of Government Efficiency,” a controversial team tasked with shrinking the government.
Lawmakers accuse him of using his position to benefit his companies, including Tesla and SpaceX.
In a letter led by Rep. Greg Casar, Democrats demanded Musk immediately resign.
They also warned that he cannot return to government service for a year unless he gives up his private business holdings.
Musk also has faced backlash for allegedly granting his employees unauthorized access to taxpayer information and pushing to shut down government agencies — powers that belong to Congress.
Casar told Axios the pressure on Trump will grow as the May 30 deadline nears, saying Democrats have “legal and political tools” to force Musk out.
The White House has not responded.
Sources say officials may argue that unpaid travel days don’t count toward Musk’s service limit.
However, Democrats insist Musk’s continued role breaches federal ethics laws and constitutional norms.
