Democrats call for investigation into Justice Thomas’ conduct
WASHINGTON – A group of Democrats in the House of Representatives have sought investigation into the conduct of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas over his ties to wealthy Republican donors.
In a letter to the Justice Department, five House Democrats, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, urged action against the judge for receiving undisclosed gifts.
The investigative news site ProPublica had revealed that Justice Thomas flew on vacation 38 times, boarded a private jet 26 times, and had VIP access to sporting events and luxury resorts.
Thomas is required to file annual reports disclosing his gifts, and failure to do so can result in a penalty under federal law.
Ocasio-Cortez and other Democrats have previously called for Thomas’ ouster over ethics problems, including his unsigned recusal in a case involving the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Critics have complained that the Supreme Court is not subject to a mandatory code of ethics.
A bill has been introduced in the Senate Judiciary Committee that would require the courts to adopt an enforceable code of ethics. However, it is unlikely to pass the full Senate and the Republican-controlled House.
Republicans have so far defended Thomas, claiming he has broken no laws.
