Dalits, or Black untouchables of India, are at the bottom of the caste hierarchy of India’s social system
NEW DELHI, India – A Dalit teenager was allegedly lynched and killed by an upper caste Hindu mob in India.
Reports said that his sister was also attacked, and the mother was stripped naked, when they tried to protect the teenager.
Dalits, or Black untouchables of India, are at the bottom of the caste hierarchy of India’s social system.
The incident occurred in Sagar district in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, which is ruled by the Hindu nationalist Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).
The incident sparked a political controversy, with the opposition Congress Party and other parties criticizing the ruling BJP government’s handling of the case.
The sister of the 18-year-old victim alleged that some people pressured her to withdraw her complaint, which led to the attack on her.
In 2019, the victim’s sister had filed a complaint against four men, accusing them of threatening and beating her.
Police have registered a case against nine identified persons and three to four unidentified persons.
