Continuous decline in popular approval of U.S. Supreme Court
WASHINGTON – An opinion poll has found that nearly 59% of Americans have an unfavorable view of the Supreme Court.
The current decline is down 6 percentage points from January when 47% approved and 53% disapproved. The poll, conducted by Marquette Law School, indicates a continued decline in approval of the Supreme Court.
The poll found that only 41% of Americans approve of the nine justices.
Over time, there have been many reports in the media about ethics and transparency issues confronting the Supreme Court.
The poll was conducted between May 8-18.
Earlier in April, ProPublica – an investigative online news platform – had reported on extravagant trips and gifts that Justice Clarence Thomas had accepted over the years from a prominent Republican donor.
Following the Supreme Court’s reversal of the Roe v. Wade ruling last June, there was a significant partisan division between Democrats and Republicans over their views of the Court.
That ruling overturned a law that had made abortion access a federal right. After that ruling, only 38% of the population had given their approval to the highest court.
