Congressman pushes for censure of Supreme Court judge
Tennessee Congressman Steve Cohen is proposing a resolution to censure Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito.
This is for an incident involving an upside-down American flag outside his home.
Alito denied responsibility for the inverted flag, attributing it to his wife’s response to offensive yard signs.
The New York Times first reported on the incident, saying in a story last week that it was displayed less than two weeks after the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.
Critics are demanding Alito’s recusal from cases related to the 2020 election as well as the attack on the US Capitol.
Cohen is accusing Alito of breaching judicial ethics and bias.
The Democratic congressman is introducing the resolution to address what he sees as a demonstration of support for insurrectionists.
While it is unlikely to advance in the GOP-led House, 45 Democrats have already signed a letter urging Alito’s recusal.
Senate Republicans, including John Thune and Lindsey Graham, have criticized the flag display as a misstep.
