Congressional report supports COVID-19 lab leak theory
A U.S. House committee, dominated by Republicans, has concluded that COVID-19 likely originated from a laboratory mishap.
The Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, after a detailed two-year investigation involving more than a million documents, believes the virus emerged from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, partly funded by the U.S. for virus research.
This controversial theory contrasts with the widely held belief among scientists of a zoonotic origin, possibly linked to a Wuhan market.
The 520-page report also criticizes pandemic responses like lockdowns and mask mandates, declaring them largely ineffective.
The report, however, praises the travel restrictions and the swift vaccine development under Operation Warp Speed.
As part of that investigation, members of the Republican-controlled congressional panel held two days of interviews with government scientist Anthony Fauci.
Fauci, who regularly clashed with President-elect Donald Trump during his first term, also faced accusations of suppressing the theory that COVID-19 originated from a lab leak in China.
