Congress directs Apple, Google to remove TikTok from app stores by January 19
The Congress has directed Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores by Jan. 19, 2025.
Reps. John Moolenaar and Raja Krishnamoorthi, leaders of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), emphasized the companies must comply with a law aimed at safeguarding national security.
The law, signed by President Joe Biden, mandates TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app or face a US ban.
A recent court ruling upheld the legislation, dismissing claims it violated free speech rights.
In letters to Apple, Google, and TikTok CEO Shou Chew, lawmakers stressed immediate action, urging ByteDance to divest from the app.
They told the tech giants to ensure compliance with the law, highlighting Congress’ commitment to defending US interests against foreign influence.
