Congress considers major online safety bill for kids
Congress is on the brink of passing the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA).
That is a landmark bill aimed at protecting children from online dangers.
The bill was introduced in 2022 by Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Marsha Blackburn.
It has gained wide support, including from bipartisan and parents’ groups, pediatricians, children’s advocates, as well as tech giants like Microsoft and X.
KOSA would impose a “duty of care” on online platforms to prevent harm to minors.
That includes risks from bullying, substance abuse, and sexual exploitation.
The bill mandates safer default settings, limits on addictive features, and options for privacy protection.
Despite revisions addressing First Amendment concerns, some free speech advocates and critics, including Sen. Rand Paul, argue that it could lead to excessive censorship and restrict access to important information.
With 68 Senate cosponsors, the bill could pass if brought to a vote.
