Columbia University students vote overwhelmingly for divestment from Israel
Students at Columbia College, Columbia University’s undergraduate liberal arts college, have passed a divestment referendum.
Over 76% of students voted in favor of divestment.
This marks a notable increase in support since the last referendum in 2020, when approximately 61 percent of students voted in favor of divestment.
Although the referendum does not directly affect the university’s policies, it reflects student sentiment on the issues raised.
The referendum was initiated by Columbia University Apartheid Divest.
It sought opinions on divesting from Israel, terminating the Tel Aviv Global Center, and ending the university’s dual-degree program with Tel Aviv University.
In response, a university spokesperson emphasized Columbia’s inclusivity and the value of its ties with Tel Aviv University.
Columbia College Student Council President Teji Vijayakumar says he is now hoping for a university-wide referendum to gauge broader consensus.
