Columbia University adjunct professor led crackdown against students
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has credited Rebecca Weiner, an adjunct professor at Columbia University, for leading a crackdown against students advocating for a Free Palestine at the school.
The police raid saw arrests of nearly 300 students peacefully protesting against Israel’s war on Gaza.
Weiner also serves as intelligence director of the New York Police Department.
Adams says she monitored the situation and authorized the forcible clearance of protesters.
The crackdown occurred after students occupied Hamilton Hall, demanding the university divest from Israeli-related investments.
Weiner, stationed just meters away from the protest, acted as a liaison between the police and Israeli security.
She has drawn scrutiny for her involvement in controversial programs targeting Muslims and activists.
Weiner claimed the raid was due to student “rhetoric associated with terrorism” but failed to specify external instigators.
Despite criticisms, she has defended her actions, highlighting the need to address what she perceives as radicalization among protesters.
