Climate Clock drops below 6 years
WASHINGTON –The climate clock has fallen below six years for the first time, suggesting that humanity is running out of time to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5°C.
According to activists, this is a sign that the effects of climate change are already being felt. The environmental deterioration that was expected after six years is now occurring.
On Saturday, people around the world took to the streets to demand action from governments and businesses to address the climate crisis.
The Climate Clock is a project that uses a countdown timer to show how much time humanity has left to take action on climate change.
The clock has been ticking since 2020 and recently dropped below six years.
“The biggest misconception about climate is that its impacts are in the future,” the activists added.
“This summer shows the devastating impacts are now. We need to act like we are living in a climate emergency.”
In recent years, the Climate Clock team has installed “monumental clocks” in major cities such as Berlin, Germany, Glasgow, Scotland, Seoul, and Rome.
“We need to get the world, corporate, government leaders, and civil society all synchronizing our climate watches, which is getting on the same timeline and making progress on systemic solutions to the crisis,” said Climate Clock co-creator Andrew Boyd.
