Civil rights group sues authorities for restoring confederate names
Five students backed by the NAACP have filed a lawsuit against the Shenandoah County School Board for restoring Confederate names to several schools.
On May 9, the school board voted to rename Mountain View High School and Honey Run Elementary School back to Stonewall Jackson High School and Ashby Lee Elementary School, respectively.
The lawsuit argues these names create a discriminatory environment for Black students by celebrating leaders who fought to preserve slavery.
The Rev. Cozy Bailey, Virginia NAACP president, said the board’s decision supports white supremacy and racial rebellion against the U.S.
The complaint contends forcing Black students to attend schools honoring Confederate leaders violates their rights under the Fourteenth and First amendments.
This issue stems from historical segregation.
Stonewall Jackson High School initially was an all-white school established in 1959, unwelcome to Black students until desegregation efforts in 1963.
