Chinese naval fleet marks historic visit to Bangladesh amid political shifts
In a significant diplomatic gesture, a Chinese naval fleet docked in the city of Chittagong in Bangladesh on Saturday.
It is the first foreign fleet to visit since Bangladesh’s interim government took power in early August.
China’s ambassador to Bangladesh, Yao Wen, reaffirmed his nation’s unwavering commitment to fostering strong bilateral ties.
He said China’s dedication to developing relations with Bangladesh remains unchanged.
Ambassador Yao and Chinese naval commanders met with senior Bangladeshi officials to discuss enhancing maritime and security cooperation.
The Chinese embassy highlighted the importance of deepening the friendship and promoting strong cooperation for China’s Belt and Road initiative. That is the country’s global infrastructure strategy encompassing more than 150 countries and international organizations.
The visit is seen as a significant shift in Bangladesh’s diplomatic preferences. The deposed government of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was seen as excessively pro-India in its approach.
