Chinese Foreign Minister, Russian Envoy Visit Kabul
China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi paid a surprise visit to Afghanistan’s capital Kabul yesterday.
It is his first since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan last August.
Political, economic, transit and investment issues are the main topics for Yi’s visit.
A Russian delegation also arrived in Kabul to discuss a range of issues with Afghan officials.
Yi met with the first Deputy Prime Minister Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Amir Khan Muttaqi.
Most countries have taken a wait-and-see approach to the Taliban’s interim government.
But Yi’s visit sent a “positive message,” officials said.
It comes a day after Yi attended the foreign ministers’ summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation or OIC, hosted by neighboring Pakistan.
