China holds tight grip on Uyghur travel
A new Human Rights Watch report reveals that China continues to impose strict travel restrictions on Uyghurs, limiting their freedom to travel abroad.
Despite slight improvements, Uyghurs still face severe restrictions when seeking to visit family members outside China.
Beijing allows some Uyghurs to apply for passports but demands detailed personal information.
Those permitted to leave must avoid activism and return within a set period.
If they fail to comply, their families face severe consequences.
As well, once abroad, Uyghurs must check in with Chinese officials and on their return, authorities confiscate passports.
Uyghurs living overseas also struggle to visit Chinese occupied Eastern Turkistan.
They face intense scrutiny, repeated questioning, and are only allowed to stay in hotels, not family homes.
Some are pressured to join government-organized propaganda tours.
The UN has warned that China’s treatment of Uyghurs may amount to crimes against humanity.
Activists urge foreign governments and international bodies to take stronger action against Beijing’s crackdown.
