China Allows 50 Muslims To Fast After Registering
Chinese authorities in Xinjiang are restricting the number of Muslims allowed to observe fasting in Ramadan.
The move has drawn heavy criticism from rights groups.
For years, Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims have been prohibited from fully observing Ramadan in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region known to Uyghurs as Eastern Turkestan.
That includes the government banning civil servants, students and teachers from fasting.
Some prefectures have received notices allowing only 10-50 Muslims to fast during Ramadan.
Anyone observing the fast in Xinjiang must register with authorities, officials said.
