Chilling video of Christian tribal women paraded naked surfaces in India
NEW DELHI, India – Both chambers of India’s parliament were adjourned Thursday after a shocking video surfaced on social media showing women being paraded naked and sexually assaulted.
The incident took place in the northeastern state of Manipur.
Manipur state, which borders Myanmar, has been witnessing violent clashes between two tribal groups, the Meites, who are Hindus, and the Kukis, who are Christians, since May.
The video shows two Kuki women being paraded naked and attacked by a crowd.
According to reports, the women were also gang raped.
The incident occurred on May 4.
One of the survivors in the video told media outlets the police were present but did not help them.
The second survivor said she saw four police officers sitting in the car watching the violence.
The complaint to the police alleged that the Hindu Meitei mob was armed with sophisticated weapons.
The survivor said the attackers took the women to a bushy area and tortured them.
In Manipur, the Internet has been shut down since May 3 – a circumstance that may explain why this video was delayed in appearing on Twitter.
So far 150 people have lost their lives in the state and tens of thousands have been displaced and are living in temporary camps in the past two months.
Ahead of the parliament session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as a shame for any civilized society.
What has happened to the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven. The incident is shameful for the country, the guilty will not be spared,” Modi said outside the parliament building.
Fifteen opposition lawmakers had asked for the suspension of all business and discussion of the ongoing violence. But the government rejected the demand leading to an uproar.
