Canadian prime minister blames American right for Muslim opposition to LGBTQ
CALGARY, Canada – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has blamed the “American right” for Muslim opposition to the inclusion of equality and LGBTQ in the curriculum.
A video of his meeting with members of the Muslim community at the Bait u Nur Mosque in Calgary last week has surfaced in the media.
He is seen telling the audience that right-wing forces are using the issue of LGBTQ rights to drive a wedge between the Muslim community and the government.
Trudeau also said the government will always stand up for the rights of LGBT children, even if they are LGBT Muslims.
Muslim leaders rejected Trudeau’s claims and said they will not be misled by the American right.
The issue of gender ideology in schools has become a major source of division in Canada.
Some parents and religious groups express concern about the impact this could have on children.
They said it could lead to confusion and discomfort among young children and also undermine the traditional roles of mothers and fathers.
The government has defended its curriculum, saying it is meant to teach students about diversity and inclusion.
Trudeau said the government’s curriculum is based on science and evidence.
He said it should help children understand their own identity and the identity of others.
However, he stressed that the government would not force any child to participate in activities they did not want to.
Activist Sameerah Munshi of the Coalition of Virtue said the Muslim faith is not biased and people in her community are not backward.
Part of the American dream, she said, is to pass on values to children.
