Canada confronts Israel about alleged online Islamophobic misinformation campaign
The Canadian government has confronted Israel for allegedly backing an online Islamophobic misinformation campaign targeting Canadian citizens.
The Toronto Star reported that Canada conveyed these concerns after Israeli newspaper Haaretz claimed a state branch had hired a private firm to influence public opinion in Canada and the US.
Global Affairs Canada spokesperson James Emmanuel Wanki told the Toronto Star the Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) that monitors foreign state-sponsored misinformation is investigating the prosecution.
He says the RRM has corroborated some aspects of the claims.
The report said the Israeli Embassy in Ottawa did not respond to the Toronto Star’s request for comment.
Amira Elghawaby, Canada’s anti-Islamophobia official, described the accusation as “extremely disturbing.”
