Calls for tougher action as Canada marks anti-Islamophobia day
On the International Day to Combat Islamophobia on March 15, a Muslim rights group said Canada must do more to fight hate.
Amira Elghawaby, Canada’s Special Representative on Islamophobia, said Muslims continue to face systemic barriers, violence, and discrimination.
She warned that Islamophobia fuels racial profiling and unfair security concerns.
Canadian Muslim Forum President Samer Majzoub said Ottawa must introduce stronger hate speech laws and tougher interventions.
The forum called for stronger hate speech laws and tougher government action to protect Muslim communities.
The government says it is tackling the issue, boosting funding for community security and anti-racism programs.
Governor General Mary Simon also urged Canadians to stand against hate.
She said online and offline harassment weakens the country.
