CAIR files complaint over Muslim student assaults, Hijab removal
The Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Maryland chapter has lodged a civil rights complaint on behalf of a 12-year-old Muslim student.
The student faced harassment, assaults, and forcible removal of her hijab at Mace’s Lane Middle School in Cambridge.
The child’s mother Latoya Gibbs says her daughter was harassed by peers on the bus ride home from school.
They reportedly chanted “fake Muslim” and taunted her with threats of taking off her hijab.
CAIR says the incidents, which occurred from March 25 to May 1, traumatized the middle schooler.
The civil rights organization also says that despite her parent’s efforts, the school failed to address the situation adequately for the student.
CAIR is demanding a public apology, disciplinary actions against negligent staff, cultural and anti-bullying training, restorative measures for the student, policy amendments, and academic support.
