CAIR files civil rights complaint against University of Georgia
The Georgia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) alongside student and social justice groups is calling for an investigation into the University of Georgia for alleged discriminatory practices against Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim students.
A Title VI federal civil rights complaint has been filed with the US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights.
The complaint accuses the university of fostering a hostile environment by failing to address escalating harassment against students supporting Palestine since October 2023.
Incidents include the arrest of peaceful protesters, barring students from graduation, and ignoring safety concerns raised by student organizations.
The complaint details how University President Jere Morehead and administrators repeatedly ignored meeting requests from students when they complained of threats to their physical safety.
CAIR-Georgia Executive Director Azka Mahmood said the group wants the Department of Education to investigate the well-documented anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, and anti-Palestinian stances and actions of the university.
