Burkina Faso bans Voice of America broadcasts for three months
Burkina Faso has imposed a three-month suspension on the US-funded Voice of America (VOA) after the broadcaster allegedly aired a controversial program.
The country’s Superior Council of Communication claims the show undermined the morale of the Burkinabe and Malian Armed Forces.
The broadcast, which aired Sept. 19, featured reporter Bagassi Koura discussing a recent terrorist attack in Bamako, calling it “courageous” and critiquing the armed forces’ security efforts.
The council accused the program of lacking credible references and spreading misinformation that could glorify terrorism.
This suspension follows previous bans on international media, including VOA and the BBC, earlier this year.
The council also halted all synchronization of national media with international outlets until further notice, urging local stations to exercise more caution in programming choices.
