British Muslim body accuses banks of closing accounts of Muslims
LONDON – The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) has accused banks of closing the accounts of British Muslims without proper transparency and redress.
The MCB said that individuals and organizations from the community were disproportionately affected by this problem.
The organization expressed deep concern about this practice.
The organization has written to high-level politicians calling for a review of the decision-making process and the use of third parties in the banking sector.
MCB Secretary General Zara Mohammed said the practice continues unchecked, with limited transparency and little to no recourse for those affected.
She said high-profile Muslim-led charities and prominent Muslim individuals were affected.
They have been unable to speak out for fear of reputational damage, she said.
The MCB has called for an investigation to determine why British Muslims and Muslim-led organizations appear to be systematically singled out.
A Treasury spokesman said the government was clear that it was wrong to withdraw someone’s bank account because of their political views or statements.
