Bomb attack on police convoy in Pakistan kills three officers
The explosion, suspected to be carried out by Baloch separatists, highlights ongoing security challenges in Pakistan’s southwestern region
QUETTA, Pakistan (MNTV) — A powerful roadside bomb exploded near a vehicle carrying security personnel in Pakistan’s southwest province Balochistan on Tuesday, killing three officers and wounding 18 others.
According to Shahid Rind, spokesperson for the Balochistan government, the injured officers were rushed to a nearby hospital, with the most seriously injured transferred to Quetta, the provincial capital located 50 kilometers away.
An investigation into the bombing has been initiated.
The explosion took place in the Kund Mas area of Mastung district as a police vehicle carrying officers from a training center in Kalat district was returning to their base.
The vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED), which left several officers in critical condition.
Local authorities have declared an emergency at nearby hospitals to treat the wounded.
Mastung Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Younas Magsii, confirmed that more than 40 officers were traveling back to Mastung Police Lines when the bomb went off.
“On a daily basis, our policemen used to return to Mastung after completing their duties,” Magsii said, as reported by Dawn News.
While no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, authorities suspect Baloch separatists may be behind the bombing.
Balochistan has been the focal point of an ongoing insurgency, with separatist groups, including the designated terrorist group Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), continuing to target security forces and government institutions.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack, emphasizing the government’s resolve to eliminate terrorism in the region.
“Immediate medical assistance will be provided to the injured, and we pray for the souls of the martyred and strength for their families,” Sharif said.
President Asif Ali Zardari also extended his condolences, praying for the swift recovery of the injured and reiterating Pakistan’s resolve to continue its fight against terrorism.
The provincial government has vowed to bring the attackers to justice.
The incident underscores the persistent security challenges in Balochistan, where separatist movements continue to threaten both military and civilian targets.
