Blaming U.S. Interference Pakistani PM Calls For Fresh Elections
Pakistanis will head to the polls to elect a new government within three months.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Imran Khan foiled an attempt to boot him from office by getting the president to dissolve the national assembly.
The assembly’s deputy speaker refused to accept a motion of no confidence in the government.
Khan appeared on TV to say there had been “foreign interference” in Pakistan’s democratic institutions.
He urged the president to dissolve the assemblies and let the people decide through elections.
The presidency, a largely ceremonial office, acceded hours later.
Khan was elected in 2018.
Opponents accuse him of economic mismanagement and bungling foreign policy.
