BJP uses Bangladeshi infiltration trope in coming elections
India’s ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is ramping up its campaign rhetoric by demonizing Rohingyas and Bangladeshis to galvanize Hindu voters.
Ahead of provincial assembly elections in the eastern state of Jharkhand, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah claim the two groups have infiltrated the country.
Modi and Shah allege Rohingyas and Bangladeshis threaten India’s identity and Hindu demographics, blaming the ruling secular coalition for enabling what it called an infiltration.
This has sparked a backlash from Bangladesh’s foreign ministry, recalling similar controversy from India’s West Bengal elections.
Analysts say the political stakes are high as the BJP seeks to leverage these issues to strengthen its position and consolidate Hindu votes in tribal-dominated Jharkhand province.
