Bird flue scare: Contaminated raw milk triggers recall in California
California health authorities have issued an urgent recall for raw milk from the company Raw Farm after detecting the bird flu virus in batches sold across the state.
The affected product, with a “best by” date of Nov. 27, 2024, was identified shortly after the first U.S. case of a child contracting the virus.
The California Department of Public Health is advising consumers to avoid drinking the milk to prevent any health risks.
This discovery raises new concerns, as the H5N1 virus, traditionally known to affect only birds, has been increasingly found in various mammals, including humans.
There have been 55 cases reported in the U.S. this year alone.
The risk of transmission from animals to humans remains low. However, observers say it is a growing area of study for scientists.
