Biogas transforms lives in Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro region
KILIMANJARO, Tanzania (MNTV)- The Neema Fellowship Centre of Tanzania (ELCT) in the Kilimanjaro Region is demonstrating the benefits of transitioning to clean cooking energy by utilizing biogas generated from cow dung.
The center has successfully eliminated the use of firewood and charcoal, significantly reducing costs and environmental impact, reports The Citizen news website.
Elistaha Mlay explained that the center, which feeds over 150 people daily, installed a biogas digester in 1984. This decision has saved them millions of Tanzanian shillings annually. “With biogas, no such costs are incurred since the cow dung is free, and we have more than enough cows to produce the gas,” she stated.
Mlay assures that biogas is safe and non-explosive, offering a reliable alternative to traditional fuels.
The Kilimanjaro Region is actively promoting clean cooking energy, aiming to have 78 institutions utilizing clean energy by 2025.
Regional energy coordinator, Salome Nshemetse, reported that 18 institutions have already transitioned.
