Biden Won’t Release Afghanistan’s Assets, Even With Collapse
On Wednesday, an international aid group warned that Afghanistan is on the brink of collapse, as millions face poverty and starvation.
The International Rescue Committee said the refusal of the Biden administration and European governments to release Afghanistan’s central bank reserves is depriving its economy of critical funds.
It noted that the country is now the world’s largest humanitarian appeal, requiring a staggering $4.47 billion in aid.
That’s four times what was needed at the start of 2021, and more than is required for Syria or Yemen, the group said.
Since the Taliban recaptured power last August, ending two decades of U.S.-led warfare and American troop withdrawal, the Biden administration froze billions of dollars in Afghan assets held in the U.S.
