Biden urges building safeguards into AI system from the start
TORONTO (AA) – U.S. President Joe Biden has called for building safeguards into Artificial Intelligence or the AI systems from the beginning.
He said Tuesday that while AI holds promise, it also poses risks. Therefore, he said, it is necessary to manage the risks to society, the economy, and national security.
At a meeting on AI with civil society leaders in California, Biden said his administration proposed a bill last October to ensure safeguards.
The AI Bill of Rights proposes building safeguards into AI systems from the start.
Earlier this year, Biden directed federal agencies to stamp out bias in artificial technologies used by the federal government and combat algorithmic discrimination.
He also ordered more funding and policy guidance for the development of responsible artificial intelligence.
He said social media has already shown the damage that powerful technology can do without the proper safeguards.
He said bipartisan privacy legislation must be passed to put strict limits on the collection of personal data.
They should also ban targeted advertising to children and require companies to put health and safety first.
Last year, Biden’s government released a report titled “A Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights.”
The report identifies several issues with AI systems, such as biased hiring and credit decisions, unsafe patient care, and privacy concerns.
It also highlights the potential for AI to revolutionize the industry and benefit society.
