Biden says Supreme Court misinterpreting Constitution
WASHINGTON – U.S. President Joe Biden has called the Supreme Court ruling overturning the student loan waiver misinterpretation of the Constitution.
The Supreme Court rejected the student loan debt forgiveness plan by a 6-3 vote.
Biden told reporters at the White House that the court’s decision was a mistake. He pledged to continue helping those at the bottom of the economic scale.
“I believe the Court’s decision to strike down my student debt relief program was a mistake, was wrong,” Biden told reporters.
“I’m not going to stop fighting to deliver borrowers what they need, particularly those at the bottom end of the economic scale. So, we need to find a new way. And we’re moving as fast as we can,” he said.
Biden criticized Republican lawmakers who opposed the student aid plan.
He said those who opposed student relief received hundreds of thousands of dollars in relief themselves.
Business loans of several members of Congress were forgiven. Biden said this program cost the Treasury $760 billion.
He said some Republicans are also pushing a bill that would provide hundreds of billions of dollars in tax relief for wealthy Americans.
Biden said Republicans are also seeking a $2 trillion tax cut.
He said Republicans did not believe in deficit reduction.
The Court ruled that the debt-reduction proposal was an unlawful exercise of presidential power because it had not been officially approved by Congress.
The program aimed to forgive up to $20,000 of student loan debt for 43 million Americans, which would have amounted to a total of $430 billion.
