Biden says he supports new Venezuela elections
Washington, United States – AFP
President Joe Biden said Thursday he supports calls by Brazil and Colombia for new elections in Venezuela, an idea criticized by the opposition which believes it defeated President Nicolas Maduro in last month’s vote.
Asked by a reporter on the South Lawn of the White House if he supports new elections in Venezuela, Biden replied, “I do.”
Earlier in the day, State Department spokesman Vedant Patel had declined to comment specifically on the call for new elections but reiterated US concern about the conduct of the vote.
Venezuela’s election body “fell short of basic transparency and integrity measures and it didn’t follow national legal and regulatory provisions,” Patel told reporters.
Patel pointed to a recent report by UN experts, which agreed that “there is no precedent for such an announcement of an election outcome without the publication of these kinds of details and these tallies, and so that’s what we are continuing to press for.”
