Biden says he ‘practically’ declared a climate emergency
WASHINGTON – As environmentalists urge President Joe Biden to declare a climate emergency, he said such an emergency practically already exists.
He said the emergency is “for all practical purposes” already there, although he has not declared it.
Pointing to steps his administration has taken, he said the U.S. has joined the Paris climate agreement and passed the $368 billion Climate Action Facility.
White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden was referring to his decision last year to invoke the Defense Production Act to spur production of clean energy technologies.
Although climate activists have been urging Biden to declare a national emergency since he took office, he has yet to do so.
