Biden narrowly leads over Trump, but behind DeSantis, says opinion poll
WASHINGTON – A recent opinion poll has found that Donald Trump has a significant lead over Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the 2024 Republican election. But surprisingly it is DeSantis who is proving a strong candidate against President Joe Biden.
The opinion poll conducted by the NBC News has revealed that Biden was currently holding a narrow lead over Trump, 49% to 45%. In contrast, Biden and DeSantis are tied at 47% each.
Interestingly, about half of Republican voters said they preferred an alternative candidate to Trump.
As many as 68% of respondents expressed concerns about the health of both presidential candidates, considering that Biden is 80 years old and Trump is 77.
The NBC News poll was conducted June 16-20, after a federal grand jury handed down indictments against Trump. The indictment relates to the alleged mishandling of classified documents. These results underscore the country’s deep divisions and lack of clear consensus.
Moreover, they suggest that the 2024 presidential election could be fiercely contested without a clear frontrunner at this stage.
The poll also disclosed that a clear majority of Americans believe the country is moving in the wrong direction. The results show that 74% of respondents believe the U.S. is currently moving in the wrong direction.
Only 20% believe the nation is moving in a positive direction.
Another poll by The Economist and YouGov found that Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has the highest approval rating.
An Emerson College poll released last week found that a third-party candidate could hurt Biden’s re-election chances.
In addition, the poll surveyed public opinion about last year’s Supreme Court ruling that overturned abortion rights at the federal level.
The results show that a majority of voters, about 61%, disapprove of the ruling, while 36% approve.
