Biden defends democracy in DNC speech amid criticism over Gaza policy
In a powerful late-night speech at the Democratic National Convention on Monday, President Biden passionately defended democracy, framing the upcoming presidential election as a critical battle for the nation’s future.
Despite the late hour, the 81-year-old president delivered an emotional address, reflecting on his political career, his accomplishments, and the ongoing fight against Trumpism.
As Biden took the stage, he was met with a lengthy standing ovation and chants of “we love Joe” from the crowd, causing him to wipe away tears. Later, he described the reception as “pretty overwhelming.” His speech emphasized the importance of preserving democracy, stating, “With a grateful heart, I stand before you now on this August night to report that democracy has prevailed. Democracy has delivered. And now democracy must be preserved.”
Throughout his address, Biden highlighted his administration’s legislative successes while sharply criticizing former President Trump, whom he labeled a “liar” and a “loser.” He also reflected on his decades of public service, acknowledging his mistakes but affirming his commitment to the American people.
Biden praised Vice President Kamala Harris, calling his decision to select her as his running mate the “best decision” of his political career. He vowed to be the “best campaign volunteer” for Harris and her vice-presidential running mate, Tim Walz. Biden also emphasized the power of women voters, predicting that Trump would face their full force in 2024, just as MAGA Republicans did in 2022.
The president’s speech was introduced by his daughter, Ashley Biden, who described the election as “the fight of our lifetime” and urged voters to support Harris. Biden later said her introduction was the highlight of his night.
The convention was running behind schedule, with Biden’s speech beginning just before 11:30 p.m. ET due to extended applause for earlier speakers. Convention officials acknowledged the delays but prioritized giving Biden the opportunity to speak directly to the American people.
Earlier in the evening, Harris made a surprise appearance, thanking Biden for his “historic leadership” and lifetime of service. Biden’s decision to suspend his campaign and endorse Harris on July 21 marked a symbolic moment for the Democratic Party, which has since experienced a surge in momentum that they hope will continue beyond the convention.
However, Biden’s speech did not escape criticism. Many progressives and human rights advocates have been vocal about their disappointment with Biden’s stance on Gaza, particularly his administration’s role in the genocide and continued military aid to Israel. Critics argue that Biden has failed to address what they see as an ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with some calling his policy a betrayal of Democratic values and a contributor to the suffering of Palestinian civilians.
