Bethlehem mayor unveils mural in honor of slain journalist Abu Akleh
Speakers underlined importance of mural not only for Abu Akleh, but also for all victims of Israeli occupation
BETHLEHEM, Palestine – A mural honoring slain journalist Shireen Abu Akleh has been unveiled by the municipality in the Palestinian city of Bethlehem.
The event on al-Mahd Street was attended by Abu Akleh’s family, colleagues, and local dignitaries.
Abu Akleh was shot dead by an Israeli soldier in 2022 while reporting from Jenin, without anyone being held responsible.
Walid al-Omari from Al Jazeera’s Ramallah bureau emphasized the symbolic message of the mural and promised to continue working for justice for Shireen.
The speakers underlined the importance of the mural not only for Abu Akleh, but also for all victims of the Israeli occupation.
Hanna Hanania, the mayor of Bethlehem, paid tribute to Abu Akleh as a representative of the city and “a martyr of truth” for the Palestinian cause.
Abu Akleh, a Palestinian-American journalist who has worked for Al Jazeera since 1997, was initially falsely accused by Israel of being killed by Palestinian militants.
However, Israel later admitted that its soldier probably shot her, albeit unintentionally.
Israel did not launch a criminal investigation, prompting Al Jazeera to bring the case to the International Criminal Court.
Reports and witnesses confirm that no fighting took place near the site where Abu Akleh was killed.
