Basrah boosts gas output with 80 million cubic feet in southern Iraq
New projects in South Rumaila and Majnoon fields to ease power shortages ahead of summer
BASRAH, Iraq, (MNTV) – Iraq’s Basrah Gas Company (BGC) has raised its production capacity by an additional 80 million standard cubic feet of gas, as part of a broader national strategy to expand energy output in southern Iraq amid rising demand.
The announcement was made by BGC’s deputy director, Marfa Kadhim Al-Asadi, in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), where he noted that the company is focusing strategically on gas sector investments to meet growing power needs.
Under Iraq’s first licensing round, BGC operates three key gas fields in the south and is aiming to enhance gas capture efficiency over the next three years.
Al-Asadi stated that the company has adopted a comprehensive approach to mitigate expected power challenges during the upcoming summer months.
He also emphasized BGC’s ongoing collaboration with international field operators, including British Petroleum (BP), to fast-track projects designed to elevate production.
“Several major projects were completed in 2024,” Al-Asadi said.
“Some initiatives that were originally scheduled for the end of 2025 will now be completed within the next few months.”
The increase in output is primarily attributed to two significant developments. The South Rumaila gas desalination project, which is contributing 40 million standard cubic feet, and another 40 million standard cubic feet from the Majnoon field.
Al-Asadi confirmed that this added volume will be directed to support the national electricity grid.
