Bangladesh premier calls for investment in science to reclaim lost Muslim heritage
DHAKA, Bangladesh – Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday called on the Muslim world to invest more in science and technology.
Speaking at the 35th convocation of the Islamic Technical College (IUT), she urged Muslim nations to develop strong entrepreneurship in the fields of science.
She said Muslims are lagging even though they were once leaders in science, technology, literature, and culture.
Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Hissein Brahim Taha, who is also chancellor of the university, presided over the event.
The OIC-funded university offers undergraduate and graduate programs in engineering and technical education.
Hasina said Muslims currently have considerable wealth.
She said it is necessary to use these resources for the development of science and modern technology.
“We (the Muslim nations) can regain our glorious lost heritage by using this resource for the development of science and modern technology,” Hasina said.
She called the lack of unity among Muslim communities a weakness and urged Muslim states to work together.
The OIC secretary general, who arrived in Bangladesh on Saturday for a five-day official visit, also visited Rohingya refugee camps to see their living conditions.
