Bangladesh agrees to renew passports for 69,000 Rohingya in Saudi Arabia
Bangladesh has agreed to renew the passports of 69,000 Rohingya living in Saudi Arabia since the 1970s, following a request from the Saudi government.
These Rohingya initially migrated to Saudi Arabia in 1973 and 1974 with Bangladeshi passports.
The decision was announced after a meeting between Bangladesh’s Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and Saudi Deputy Interior Minister Nasser bin Abdul Aziz Al-Dawood in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka.
Saudi Arabia had conveyed that these Rohingya lacked passports, which could lead to repatriation, but they would not be sent back or granted Saudi citizenship.
Bangladesh plans to renew their documents in phases, according to an agreement signed last year.
