Azerbaijan, Italy explore new aviation opportunities amid growing air traffic
AZAL and Italian ambassador discuss expanded routes and stronger bilateral ties
BAKU, Azerbaijan (MNTV) – Azerbaijan has initiated efforts to strengthen air transport cooperation with Italy, aiming to expand connectivity and boost bilateral ties in trade, tourism, and culture.
The meeting between the president of Azerbaijan Airlines, and the Italian ambassador, focused on expanding air connectivity and leveraging aviation to deepen economic, cultural, and tourism ties, according to Azertac News.
Both sides highlighted the strategic importance of increasing flight frequencies, which they said plays a key role in facilitating stronger bilateral relations.
Rzayev announced that AZAL increased its Baku-Milan-Baku flights to six times per week as of April 1, with plans to operate the route daily starting May 13.
The move aims to accommodate growing demand and support travel flows ahead of major international events, including the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
Ambassador Di Gianfrancesco emphasized the significance of direct flights between the two countries, noting their value in promoting tourism and business exchanges, especially with Italy preparing to host the upcoming Winter Games.
AZAL currently maintains regular service on the Baku-Milan-Baku route. In 2024, the airline conducted 252 round-trip flights, carrying a total of 67,708 passengers.
In the first quarter of 2025 alone, AZAL operated 67 flights on the same route, transporting 15,236 passengers.
The two parties also exchanged views on the potential for opening new routes, launching joint initiatives, and pursuing regional integration projects within the aviation sector.
