Austrian Greens Party Takes Flak Over Alleged Coalition Deal For Headscarf Ban
Austria’s Greens party continued to receive public criticism Wednesday over an alleged coalition agreement to ban headscarves for teachers in schools.
Leaked documents show the Greens had engaged in an undisclosed deal with the Austrian People’s Party as part of the negotiations for the January 2020 coalition agreement.
The Greens allegedly promised to support the headscarf ban in return for executive board seats on the country’s public broadcaster, ORF.
The Greens party has traditionally been an ally to Muslims, foreigners and refugees.
It had attracted the support of voters with migrant backgrounds by standing against rising populist tendencies in Austria.
