Australia’s A-League to have Ramadan breaks again this season
Sydney FC’s Moroccan player Anas Ouahim says the initiative helps Muslim players balance faith and sport
Sydney, Australia (MNTV) – Australia’s A-League will once again allow a 90-second pause in play during evening matches over Ramadan for Muslim players to break their fast, according to Radio New Zealand.
The initiative, introduced last season, provides Muslim athletes the opportunity to hydrate and regain energy after fasting all day.
Sydney FC’s Morocco under-23 international, Anas Ouahim, emphasized the importance of the breaks for Muslim players.
“It’s definitely challenging,” Ouahim said in an A-League media release.
“Some jobs are more physically demanding than others, and as a footballer, you need food and water to perform at your best.”
He explained that breaking the fast on time is crucial for athletes.
“When you don’t drink or eat for so long, breaking your fast helps you hydrate, maybe have a date or something small to regain energy.”
Ouahim, who was born in Germany and previously played for FC Koln, added that the initiative allows him to practice his religion while continuing to play the sport he loves.
“I’ve found a balance that works well,” he said.
“Having that opportunity is really beneficial, especially for professional athletes.”
The A-League’s Ramadan breaks reflect its efforts to support diversity and inclusion within the sport, benefiting players who observe the Islamic holy month.
