Australian Senator faces court grilling for Islamophobic remarks
In a Sydney court, Australian Sen. Pauline Hanson faced cross-examination over alleged Islamophobic comments directed at Sen. Mehreen Faruqi.
Hanson, leader of One Nation, denied knowing Faruqi’s Muslim identity when telling her to “piss off back to Pakistan” on social media.
Faruqi, of the Greens, initiated the case over Hanson’s social media post mourning Queen Elizabeth II’s passing.
Hanson admitted ignorance of Pakistan’s Muslim majority.
Faruqi’s counsel presented videos of Hanson’s previous anti-immigrant and Islamophobic statements, including refusing to sell her house to a Muslim.
Hanson acknowledged the possibility of urging white migrants to leave.
The hearing continues, highlighting tensions between Australian politicians over racial and religious issues.
