Australia appoints Aftab Malik as envoy to combat Islamophobia
The Australian government has appointed Aftab Malik as its special envoy to combat Islamophobia, following months of delay after announcing a similar role for antisemitism.
Malik, a U.N. Alliance of Civilizations “Global Expert” on Muslim affairs, migrated to Australia in 2012.
He has worked in community engagement within the state of New South Wales premier’s department.
His appointment comes just before a deadline set by the Australian National Imams Council, which warned that the prolonged vacancy was becoming “farcical.”
Immigration Minister Tony Burke emphasized Malik’s role aims to foster dialogue within the Muslim community and address discrimination.
Malik said both antisemitism and Islamophobia are unacceptable and has called for unity against hatred.
His three-year term begins Oct. 14, contributing to the government’s $90 million initiatives to address community impacts stemming from Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza.
