Around 3.6% of world’s population live outside their country of birth
VIENNA/GENEVA (AA) – About 281 million people, or 3.6% of the world’s population, live outside their country of birth.
The staggering number of immigrants around the world is almost equal to the entire population of Indonesia.
According to the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), 86.7 million immigrants have gone to Europe and 85.6 million to various Asian countries by 2020.
No less than 58.7 million have gone to North America, 25.4 million to Africa, and 14.8 million to Latin America and the Caribbean.
About 9.4 million are in the Oceania region, including Australia.
According to the latest UNHCR Global Report, 108.4 million people got displaced worldwide in 2022.
This figure includes 62.5 million internally displaced persons.
There are also 35.3 million refugees, 5.4 million asylum seekers, and 5.2 million people in need of international protection.
Interestingly, low- and middle-income countries host 76% of the world’s refugees and other persons in need of international protection.
The least developed countries provide asylum to 20% of the total vulnerable population.
70% of displaced persons are hosted in countries neighboring their countries of origin.
Türkiye hosts the largest refugee population in the world, with nearly 3.6 million refugees.
