Critics say the move is the latest example of anti-Muslim discrimination under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.
Authorities have imposed an indefinite ban on gatherings after a video from Thursday’s protests went viral on social media.
It shows police in riot gear beating a protester with batons.
